Durham Art Museums Geared Up for Museum Month

The Canadian Museum Association, the art museums in Durham Region and the Region of Durham Tourism Department promote May as Museum Month. Visit the Visual Arts Centre Clarington, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa and the Station Gallery in Whitby to explore the wonderful ways in which art museums educate, inspire and preserve.

Museum month brochures are available from the Region of Durham Tourism Department, the galleries above and from the Durham West Arts Centre at www.dwac.ca

Bowmanville, Oshawa, Pickering, Whitby—In support of the Canadian Museum Association’s designation of May as Museum Month in Canada, The Visual Arts Centre of Clarington; The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa; Durham West Arts Centre, Pickering; and Station Gallery, Whitby are planning a media event for their 2007 Museum Month brochure—a special program for the brochure launch on Thursday, 26 April at 9:30 a.m. at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery.

Each Durham Region gallery Director will select one work to explain the role that the public art museum plays in preserving, inspiring and educating. "This event provides a wonderful opportunity to understand the value of public art galleries and organizations in the Durham community," says David Aurandt Executive Director of The Robert McLaughlin Gallery. "We've invited all levels of Durham Region politicians to voice their support for the various community needs served by public art museums," adds Angie Littlefield of the Durham West Arts Centre. Once launched, The Museum Month brochure will be available at all Durham Region Tourism information locations as well as at the galleries. Executive Director's Donna Raetsen-Kemp of Whitby's Station and Richard Toms, of Clarington chime in, "We're proud of our public education role and our promotion of artists. We want the public to know more about who we are and what we do."

The public is invited to attend the media launch on Thursday, 26 April at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery,
72 Queen Street, Oshawa.
